UK, Birmingham, The Workhouse 1812 Copper Penny Token.  28.13 g.; 37 mm.; edge centre grained left \\\\\; coin orientation.  Withers 395; Davis 41.  BIRMINGHAM around above a view of the workhouse, petite W, for the engraver Paul Wyon, on the right pavement, 3 mm. from the end.  A flaw in the field below the 1 and 2 of the date, 1812.  Rx. ONE POUND NOTE PAYABLE AT THE WORKHOUSE FOR 240 TOKENS in 4 lines, above and below arms.  The centre of the shield is over the R.  The T is under the space bet K and H.

About Extremely Fine w even brown surfaces.  A minor rim knock showing to obv only at 10:00.  Rare.  $150.

Ex Francis B. Cokayne Collection w his ticket, having purchased from L. Clements, 24 April 1909, for one shilling, 6 pence, or 18 times the nominal value.
